One of the projects that we have worked on in seventh grade art is creating our own compositions of a flower vase in an alcove. The students do several guided practices dealing with shape, texture and the features of light, then they design a space and use all the skills to put together a unique composition.

GraphiteGraphite- We use graphite pencils that can make darker marks than number two pencils when we do this project in graphite. Sometimes we use powdered graphite and buff it into place.

ValueValue is a very important concept in visual art. Value is the name of one member of the family of THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN. The definition of value is the amount of light or dark in an area. Understanding how to draw realistically requires the learner to appreciate the whole range of values of what they are drawing.

CharcoalThe other drawing material that we use to create this project is artists' charcoal. It makes marks like graphite, but it is not quite as slippery or shiny. We use special art charcoal so that it is even. Charcoal from the grill works too, but it is not quite as predictable.
